Summary
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Sun Java. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Networking. This manipulation causes memory corruption. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3573. Furthermore, there is an exploit available.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun Java (Programming Language Software) (version now known). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Networking. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Unspecified vulnerability in the Networking component in Oracle Java SE and Java for Business 6 Update 21 and 5.0 Update 25 allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via unknown vectors. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the October 2010 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from a reliable downstream vendor that this is related to missing validation of request headers in the HttpURLConnection class when they are set by applets, which allows remote attackers to bypass the intended security policy.
The weakness was shared 10/19/2010 by Roberto Suggi Liverani with security-assessment.com (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at oracle.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3573. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50003 (CentOS 5 : java-1.6.0-openjdk (CESA-2010:0768)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155587 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for java-1.6.0-openjdk (ELSA-2010-0768)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (50003), SecurityFocus (BID 44028†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27860†). The entries VDB-55160, VDB-55158, VDB-55157 and VDB-55156 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
