Mozilla Firefox before 3.5.14 and 3.6.x before 3.6.11, Thunderbird before 3.0.9 and 3.1.x before 3.1.5, and SeaMonkey before 2.0.9 recognize a wildcard IP address in the subject s Common Name field of an X.509 certificate, which might allow man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL servers via a crafted certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority.
The weakness was presented 10/21/2010 by Richard Moore as Bug 578697 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3170 since 08/27/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75648 (openSUSE Security Update : MozillaFirefox (MozillaFirefox-3422)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118663 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2010:0782)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
