A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in ISC DHCP up to 4.2.0 (Network Management Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component DHCP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. ISC DHCP server 4.0 before 4.0.2, 4.1 before 4.1.2, and 4.2 before 4.2.0-P1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via a DHCPv6 packet containing a Relay-Forward message without an address in the Relay-Forward link-address field.

The weakness was published 11/03/2010 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3611 since 09/27/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75463 (openSUSE Security Update : dhcp (dhcp-3484)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165164 (SUSE Security Update (SUSE-SR:2010:021)).

Upgrading to version 4.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
