Array index error in the apply_rcs_change function in rcs.c in CVS 1.11.23 allows local users to gain privileges via an RCS file containing crafted delta fragment changes that trigger a heap-based buffer overflow.

The weakness was disclosed 10/29/2010 by Jan Lieskovsky as Bug 642146 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-3846 since 10/08/2010. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68149 (Oracle Linux 6 : cvs (ELSA-2010-0918)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
