Adobe ColdFusion 8.0/8.0.1/9.0 Component Browser code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Adobe ColdFusion 8.0/8.0.1/9.0 (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component Component Browser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

CRLF injection vulnerability in the Component Browser in Adobe ColdFusion 8.0 through 9.0.1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTTP headers and conduct HTTP response splitting attacks via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 06/12/2012 by Michael Dominice, Yoshi Russell and Stephen Duncan with Intelligent Software Solutions as APSB12-15 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at adobe.com. The public release has been coordinated with Adobe. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-2041 since 04/02/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74190 (Adobe ColdFusion HTTP Response Splitting (APSB12-15) (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12650 (Adobe Security Hotfix for ColdFusion (APSB12-15)).

Applying the patch APSB12-15 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at helpx.adobe.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (74190), SecurityFocus (BID 53941†), OSVDB (82847†), Secunia (SA49517†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1027146†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
