Apple Mac OS X up to 10.6.2 cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.6.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

OpenSSL in Apple Mac OS X 10.6.x before 10.6.5 does not properly perform arithmetic, which allows remote attackers to bypass X.509 certificate authentication via an arbitrary certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority.

The weakness was shared 11/15/2010 by ryan with isec as HT4435 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1378. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50548 (Mac OS X 10.6.x < 10.6.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118728 (Apple Mac OS X 10.6.5 and Security Update 2010-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2010-11-10-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.6.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (50548), SecurityFocus (BID 44831†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28213†). The entries VDB-4215, VDB-53765, VDB-53380 and VDB-53379 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
