Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.7 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Directory Services. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the password-validation functionality in Directory Services in Apple Mac OS X 10.5.8 and 10.6.x before 10.6.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 11/15/2010 by Rodrigo Rubira Branco with Mozilla Corporation as HT4435 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1840 since 05/06/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Rodrigo Rubira and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50548 (Mac OS X 10.6.x < 10.6.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118728 (Apple Mac OS X 10.6.5 and Security Update 2010-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2010-11-10-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.5.8 eliminates this vulnerability.
