Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 sctp_packet_config denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9. This impacts the function sctp_packet_config. Executing a manipulation can lead to denial of service. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3432. There is no exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function sctp_packet_config. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The sctp_packet_config function in net/sctp/output.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.35.6 performs extraneous initializations of packet data structures, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (panic) via a certain sequence of SCTP traffic.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 11/22/2010 by Thomas Dreibholz (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at marc.info. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3432. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1708 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68176 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2011-0004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155569 (Oracle Linux 5 Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Security and Bug Fix Update (ELSA-2010-2011)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68176), SecurityFocus (BID 43480†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27275†). The entries VDB-4176, VDB-55542, VDB-55538 and VDB-55535 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
