Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Wireshark up to 1.4.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects the function dissect_ldss_transfer of the file epan/dissectors/packet-ldss.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the dissect_ldss_transfer function (epan/dissectors/packet-ldss.c) in the LDSS dissector in Wireshark 1.2.0 through 1.2.12 and 1.4.0 through 1.4.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via an LDSS packet with a long digest line that triggers memory corruption.
The weakness was shared 11/18/2010 as Bug 5318 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-4300 since 11/22/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Nephi Johnson in pcap File and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50678 (Wireshark < 1.2.13 / 1.4.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165173 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:001)).
A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (15676), Tenable (50678), SecurityFocus (BID 44987†), OSVDB (69354†) and Secunia (SA42290†). The entries VDB-55625, VDB-55540, VDB-55263 and VDB-56034 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
