Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function rs_ioctl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The rs_ioctl function in drivers/char/amiserial.c in the Linux kernel 2.6.36.1 and earlier does not properly initialize a certain structure member, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a TIOCGICOUNT ioctl call.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 11/29/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 648661 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-4076 since 10/25/2010. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1715 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55762 (Ubuntu 10.10 : linux vulnerabilities (USN-1183-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165554 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:012)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (55762), SecurityFocus (BID 45059†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-30314†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-55675, VDB-55566, VDB-55562 and VDB-55560. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
