Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function viafb_ioctl_get_viafb_info. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The viafb_ioctl_get_viafb_info function in drivers/video/via/ioctl.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc5 does not properly initialize a certain structure member, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a VIAFB_GET_INFO ioctl call.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 11/30/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 648671 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-4082 since 10/25/2010. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is possible to download the exploit at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1716 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51066 (Fedora 13 : kernel-2.6.34.7-63.fc13 (2010-18506)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165548 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:004)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (51066), SecurityFocus (BID 43817†), Secunia (SA42778†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28710†). Similar entries are available at VDB-55526, VDB-55525, VDB-56001 and VDB-56000. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
