ISC BIND up to 9.7.2-p2 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in ISC BIND. The impacted element is an unknown function. Performing a manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3614. There is no available exploit. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in ISC BIND (Domain Name Software). This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

named in ISC BIND 9.x before 9.6.2-P3, 9.7.x before 9.7.2-P3, 9.4-ESV before 9.4-ESV-R4, and 9.6-ESV before 9.6-ESV-R3 does not properly determine the security status of an NS RRset during a DNSKEY algorithm rollover, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (DNSSEC validation error) by triggering a rollover.

The weakness was presented 12/02/2010 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-3614. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63695 (AIX 6.1 TL 4 : bind9 (IV01118)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119638 (Apple Mac OS X Lion v10.7.2 and Security Update 2011-006 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2011-10-12-3)).

Upgrading to version 9.7.0b1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (63695), SecurityFocus (BID 45137†), OSVDB (69559†), SecurityTracker (ID 1024817†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28459†).
