Andy Armstrong CGI.pm up to 2.30 CGI::Simple code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Andy Armstrong CGI.pm up to 2.30. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function CGI::Simple. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The multipart_init function in (1) CGI.pm before 3.50 and (2) Simple.pm in CGI::Simple 1.112 and earlier uses a hardcoded value of the MIME boundary string in multipart/x-mixed-replace content, which allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary HTTP headers and conduct HTTP response splitting attacks via crafted input that contains this value, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-3172.

The weakness was disclosed 12/03/2010 with team509 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-2761 since 07/14/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75708 (openSUSE Security Update : perl-CGI-Simple (openSUSE-SU-2011:0020-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165187 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:005)).

A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (75708), SecurityFocus (BID 44199†), OSVDB (69588†), Secunia (SA42877†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29362†). The entries VDB-55634, VDB-55633, VDB-54469 and VDB-54348 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
