The staprun runtime tool in SystemTap 1.3 does not properly clear the environment before executing modprobe, which allows local users to gain privileges by setting the MODPROBE_OPTIONS environment variable to specify a malicious configuration file.
The weakness was published 11/17/2010 by Tavis Ormandy (Website). The advisory is shared at sources.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-4170. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
