FFmpeg up to 0.9 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The render_line function in the vorbis codec (vorbis.c) in libavcodec in FFmpeg before 0.9.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted Vorbis file, related to a large multiplier. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2011-3893.

The issue has been introduced in 06/23/2011. The weakness was published 06/19/2012 as USN-1479-1 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0859 since 01/19/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 195 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59565 (Ubuntu 11.04 / 11.10 / 12.04 LTS : libav vulnerabilities (USN-1478-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gitorious.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78925), Tenable (59565), OSVDB (83055†), Secunia (SA49621†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-36281†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
