RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 11.1 cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 11.1 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The cook codec in RealNetworks RealPlayer 11.0 through 11.1, RealPlayer SP 1.0 through 1.1.4, RealPlayer Enterprise 2.1.2, Mac RealPlayer 11.0 through 11.1, and Linux RealPlayer 11.0.2.1744 does not properly initialize the number of channels, which allows attackers to obtain unspecified "memory access" via unknown vectors.

The weakness was released 12/14/2010 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at securitytracker.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-2579 since 07/01/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50612 (RealPlayer for Windows < Build 12.0.1.609 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (50612), SecurityFocus (BID 45463†), SecurityTracker (ID 1024861†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28762†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-55747, VDB-55746, VDB-55745 and VDB-55744.
