Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 does not prevent rendering of cached content as HTML, which allows remote attackers to access content from a different (1) domain or (2) zone via unspecified script code, aka "Cross-Domain Information Disclosure Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-3342.
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was disclosed 12/16/2010 as MS10-090 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3348. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1016 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51162 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100094 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-090)).
Applying the patch MS10-090 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
