pubconv.dll (aka the Publisher Converter DLL) in Microsoft Publisher 2002 SP3 does not properly perform array indexing, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Publisher file that uses an old file format, aka "Array Indexing Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 12/16/2010 with VUPEN (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3955 since 10/14/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 10/07/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51175 (MS10-103: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Publisher Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2292970)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110139 (Microsoft Office Publisher Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-103)).
