Linux Kernel KVM Subsystem setup_routing_entry memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel. Impacted is the function setup_routing_entry of the component KVM Subsystem. Such manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-2137. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). Affected by this issue is the function setup_routing_entry of the component KVM Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in virt/kvm/irq_comm.c in the KVM subsystem in the Linux kernel before 3.2.24 allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to Message Signaled Interrupts (MSI), irq routing entries, and an incorrect check by the setup_routing_entry function before invoking the kvm_set_irq function.

The weakness was disclosed 06/19/2012 as confirmed advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). The advisory is available at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-2137 since 04/04/2012. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74513 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2014:124)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166783 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:0287-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at rhn.redhat.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (74513), SecurityFocus (BID 54063†), OSVDB (83104†), Secunia (SA49625†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-35389†). The entries VDB-5386, VDB-5571, VDB-5583 and VDB-5656 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
