IBM Tivoli Storage Manager up to 5.4 GeneratePassword memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (Backup Software). This issue affects the function GeneratePassword. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the GeneratePassword function in dsmtca (aka the Trusted Communications Agent or TCA) in the backup-archive client in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) 5.3.x before 5.3.6.10, 5.4.x before 5.4.3.4, 5.5.x before 5.5.2.10, and 6.1.x before 6.1.3.1 on Unix and Linux allows local users to gain privileges by specifying a long LANG environment variable, and then sending a request over a pipe.

The weakness was published 12/15/2010 by Kryptos Logic (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-4604. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Kryptos Logic and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.

Upgrading to version 5.4.0 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be adding authentication. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (15745), OSVDB (70183†), SecurityTracker (ID 1024901†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29188†). Similar entries are available at VDB-55867 and VDB-55866. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
