Red Hat Jboss Enterprise Web/Application Platforms up to 5.1.2 on Linux Java Naming/Directory Interface Service access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Red Hat Jboss Enterprise Web and Application Platforms up to 5.1.2 on Linux (Application Server Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Java Naming/Directory Interface Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The (1) JNDI service, (2) HA-JNDI service, and (3) HAJNDIFactory invoker servlet in JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 4.3.0 CP10 and 5.1.2, Web Platform 5.1.2, SOA Platform 4.2.0.CP05 and 4.3.0.CP05, Portal Platform 4.3 CP07 and 5.2.x before 5.2.2, and BRMS Platform before 5.3.0 do not properly restrict write access, which allows remote attackers to add, delete, or modify items in a JNDI tree via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 06/20/2012 by Christian Schlüter with VIADA as Bug 766469 as confirmed advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4605 since 11/29/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:

It was found that the JBoss JNDI service allows unauthenticated remote write access by default. The JNDI service, HA-JNDI service and HAJNDIFactory invoker servlet are all affected. A remote attacker that is able to access port 1099 (JNDI), port 1100 (HA-JNDI) or the HAJNDIFactory invoker servlet on a JBoss server could exploit this flaw to add, delete and modify items in the JNDI tree. This could lead to a wide range of attacks, affecting the integrity, availability and confidentiality of the system.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at rhn.redhat.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64042 (RHEL 4 / 5 : jbossas (RHSA-2012:1025)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.Proper firewalling of tcp/1099 (JNDI) & tcp/1100 (HA-JNDI) is able to address this issue. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77164), Tenable (64042), SecurityFocus (BID 54644†), OSVDB (83181†) and Secunia (SA49656†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
