Summary
A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Red Hat Evince. This impacts an unknown function of the component Font Parser. The manipulation leads to input validation. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2010-2641. No exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Red Hat Evince. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Font Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Array index error in the VF font parser in the dvi-backend component in Evince 2.32 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted font in conjunction with a DVI file that is processed by the thumbnailer.
The weakness was published 01/07/2011 by Marc Deslauriers as Bug 666314 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-2641 since 07/06/2010. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/11/2021).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56999 (Debian DSA-2357-1 : evince - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155508 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Evince (ELSA-2011-0009)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
