A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ReleaseInterface in the library MSHTML.DLL. Use-after-free vulnerability in the ReleaseInterface function in MSHTML.DLL in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via vectors related to the DOM implementation and the BreakAASpecial and BreakCircularMemoryReferences functions, as demonstrated by cross_fuzz, aka "MSHTML Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was presented 01/07/2011 as MS11-018 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0346. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1038 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53375 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100099 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS11-018)).
Applying the patch MS11-018 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.
