A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Macromedia ColdFusion Server MX. The default configuration of ColdFusion MX has the "Enable Robust Exception Information" option selected, which allows remote attackers to obtain the full path of the web server via a direct request to CFIDE/probe.cfm, which leaks the path in an error message.
The weakness was released 04/26/2003 by Ligen with Network Intelligence India Pvt. Ltd. as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-1469 since 10/24/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:CFIDE/probe.cfm it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11558 (Macromedia ColdFusion MX CFIDE/probe.cfm Direct Request Path Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86511 (Macromedia ColdFusion MX Error Message Path Disclosure Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at macromedia.com.Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling tcp/8500. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be disabling the affected component. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 906.
