MySQL prior 5.0.0.0 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

MySQL 5.0 before 5.0.92, 5.1 before 5.1.51, and 5.5 before 5.5.6 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (server crash) via a query that uses the (1) GREATEST or (2) LEAST function with a mixed list of numeric and LONGBLOB arguments, which is not properly handled when the function s result is "processed using an intermediate temporary table."

The weakness was presented 01/14/2011 as Bug 640858 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3838 since 10/07/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50806 (CentOS 5 : mysql (CESA-2010:0825)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19588 (MySQL Prior to Version 5.1.51 Multiple Denial Of Service Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 5.0.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64840), Tenable (50806), SecurityFocus (BID 43676†), Secunia (SA42875†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28128†).
