Details
A vulnerability has been found in libpng 1.5.0 (Image Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function png_do_rgb_to_gray of the file pngrtran.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
pngrtran.c in libpng 1.5.x before 1.5.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted palette-based PNG image that triggers a buffer overflow, related to the png_do_expand_palette function, the png_do_rgb_to_gray function, and an integer underflow. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The weakness was released 01/12/2011 by Glenn Randers-Pehrson as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-0408.
