Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 5.10 (Operating System). It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file rpc.cmsd of the component CDE Calendar Manager Service Daemon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Solaris 8, 9, and 10 allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability, related to CDE Calendar Manager Service Daemon and RPC. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the January 2011 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from other software vendors that this affects other operating systems, such as HP-UX, or claims from a reliable third party that this is a buffer overflow in rpc.cmsd via long XDR-encoded ASCII strings in RPC call 10.
The weakness was shared 01/18/2011 by Rodrigo Rubira Branco (BSDaemon) with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-4435. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/20/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
A public exploit has been developed by Rodrigo Rubira Branco in ANSI C and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71822 (Solaris 10 (x86) : 124394-11), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118922 (Solaris CDE Calendar Manager Service Daemon Vulnerability).
A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9267.
