The default configuration of sendmail in IBM AIX 6.1 and 7.1, and VIOS 2.2.1.4-FP-25 SP-02, allows local users to gain privileges by entering a command in a .forward file in a home directory.
The weakness was disclosed 06/26/2012 as confirmed knowledge base article (IBM Knowledge Base). The advisory is shared at aix.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2200 since 04/04/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69310 (AIX 7.1 : bos.net.tcp.client (U858320)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120871 (IBM AIX "sendmail" Code Execution Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at aix.software.ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
