Summary
A vulnerability was found in Linux-PAM. It has been classified as problematic. Impacted is an unknown function of the component User Account. This manipulation causes symlink. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2010-3435. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux-PAM. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component User Account. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) pam_env and (2) pam_mail modules in Linux-PAM (aka pam) before 1.1.2 use root privileges during read access to files and directories that belong to arbitrary user accounts, which might allow local users to obtain sensitive information by leveraging this filesystem activity, as demonstrated by a symlink attack on the .pam_environment file in a user s home directory.
The weakness was published 01/24/2011 by Sebastian Krahmer as Bug 641335 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3435 since 09/17/2010. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50804 (CentOS 5 : pam (CESA-2010:0819)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119031 (VMware ESX SLPD Denial of Service Vulnerability and Security Update for Third-Party Components (VMSA-2011-0004)).
Upgrading to version 0.99.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (50804), SecurityFocus (BID 43487†), Secunia (SA49711†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28027†).
