Automatedsolutions Modbus/TCP Master OPC Server up to 2.12.2 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Automatedsolutions Modbus and TCP Master OPC Server up to 2.12.2 (Automation Software). Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in Automated Solutions Modbus/TCP Master OPC Server before 3.0.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a MODBUS response packet with a crafted length field.

The weakness was shared 10/30/2010 by Jeremy Brown with Brown as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-4709 since 01/26/2011. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Jeremy Brown in Python and been published 4 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118949 (Automated Solutions Modbus/TCP OPC Server Remote Heap Corruption Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 2.12.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64944), Exploit-DB (16040), SecurityFocus (BID 45974†), OSVDB (70637†) and Secunia (SA43029†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
