Details
A vulnerability was found in MaraDNS 1.4.03/1.4.05. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function compress_add_dlabel_points of the file dns/Compress.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The compress_add_dlabel_points function in dns/Compress.c in MaraDNS 1.4.03, 1.4.05, and probably other versions allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long DNS hostname with a large number of labels, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was presented 01/23/2011 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-0520 since 01/20/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73481 (MaraDNS < 1.3.07.11 / 1.4.x < 1.4.06 / 2.0.x < 2.0.02 compress_add_dlabel_points Function Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family DNS.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64885), Tenable (73481), SecurityFocus (BID 45966†), OSVDB (70630†) and Secunia (SA43027†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
