A vulnerability was found in Novell GroupWise 7.0/8.0 (Groupware Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component GroupWise Internet Agent. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in the IMAP server component in GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA) in Novell GroupWise 7.x before 7.0 post-SP4 FTF and 8.x before 8.0 SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long mailbox name in a CREATE command.
The weakness was published 01/28/2011 by Francis Provencher as Bug 597331 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.novell.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-2777 since 07/21/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
Upgrading to version 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3581.
