The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the gettoken function in contrib/intarray/_int_bool.c in the intarray array module in PostgreSQL 9.0.x before 9.0.3, 8.4.x before 8.4.7, 8.3.x before 8.3.14, and 8.2.x before 8.2.20 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via integers with a large number of digits to unspecified functions.
The weakness was presented 02/01/2011 with Apple as Prevent buffer overrun while parsing an integer in a "query_int" value. as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.postgresql.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-4015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68193 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 / 6 : postgresql (ELSA-2011-0197)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165187 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:005)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.postgresql.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
