Details
A vulnerability was found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.7/5-1.8/5-1.9 (Network Authentication Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function do_standalone. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The do_standalone function in the MIT krb5 KDC database propagation daemon (kpropd) in Kerberos 1.7, 1.8, and 1.9, when running in standalone mode, does not properly handle when a worker child process "exits abnormally," which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (listening process termination, no new connections, and lack of updates in slave KVC) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was released 02/10/2011 with Red Hat as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-4022. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 12/29/2024).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68195 (Oracle Linux 5 : krb5 (ELSA-2011-0199)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155522 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for krb5 (ELSA-2011-0200)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
