Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing a deleted object, aka "Cached Object Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 07/10/2012 by Jose Antonio Vazquez Gonzalez with iDEFENSE Labs as MS12-044 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1522 since 03/08/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59907 (MS12-044: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2719177)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100118 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-044)).

Applying the patch MS12-044 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12433.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76724), Tenable (59907), SecurityFocus (BID 54293†), OSVDB (83653†) and Secunia (SA45690†). The entry VDB-5646 is pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
