Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun JDK 1.6.0 (Programming Tool Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Unspecified vulnerability in the Deployment component in Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in Oracle Java SE and Java for Business 6 Update 23 and earlier allows remote untrusted Java Web Start applications and untrusted Java applets to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via unknown vectors.
The bug was discovered 02/15/2011. The weakness was presented 02/17/2011 by Frederic Hoguin (TippingPoint) with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at oracle.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-4452 since 12/06/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/25/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56724 (GLSA-201111-02 : Oracle JRE/JDK: Multiple vulnerabilities (BEAST)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119309 (HP-UX Running Java Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02685)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 10 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10594.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65514), Exploit-DB (16990), Tenable (56724), SecurityFocus (BID 46388†) and OSVDB (71193†).
