Double free vulnerability in the vba_read_project_strings function in vba_extract.c in libclamav in ClamAV before 0.97 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) data in a Microsoft Office document. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The weakness was released 02/21/2011 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.clamav.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1003. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75450 (openSUSE Security Update : clamav (openSUSE-SU-2011:0208-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. Upgrading to version 0.97.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch d21fb8d975f8c9688894a8cef4d50d977022e09f is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.clamav.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
