Double free vulnerability in the vba_read_project_strings function in vba_extract.c in libclamav in ClamAV before 0.97 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) data in a Microsoft Office document. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The weakness was released 02/21/2011 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.clamav.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1003. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75450 (openSUSE Security Update : clamav (openSUSE-SU-2011:0208-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119156 (ClamAV "vba_read_project_strings()" Double Free Memory Corruption Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 0.97.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.clamav.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
