Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Novell Netware 6.5 (Operating System). This affects the function xdrDecodeString. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The xdrDecodeString function in XNFS.NLM in Novell Netware 6.5 before SP8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (abend) or execute arbitrary code via a crafted, signed value in a NFS RPC request to port UDP 1234, leading to a stack-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was released 02/18/2011 by Francis Provencher (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at download.novell.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-4227. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Francis Provencher in Ruby and been published 6 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
Upgrading to version 6.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2185. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10874.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65625), Exploit-DB (16234), SecurityFocus (BID 46535†), OSVDB (71408†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1025119†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
