A vulnerability was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function dissect_ber_choice. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. Stack consumption vulnerability in the dissect_ber_choice function in the BER dissector in Wireshark 1.2.x through 1.2.15 and 1.4.x through 1.4.4 might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via vectors involving self-referential ASN.1 CHOICE values.
The weakness was presented 03/02/2011 by joernchen with Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1142 since 03/02/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52757 (CentOS 4 / 5 : wireshark (CESA-2011:0370)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11848.
