A vulnerability was found in Symantec Altiris Notification Server 6.0. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function DownloadAndInstall in the library AeXNSPkgDLLib.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The Altiris eXpress NS SC Download ActiveX control in AeXNSPkgDLLib.dll, as used in Symantec Altiris Deployment Solution 6.9.x, Notification Server 6.0.x, and Symantec Management Platform 7.0.x exposes an unsafe method, which allows remote attackers to force the download of arbitrary files and possibly execute arbitrary code via the DownloadAndInstall method.
The weakness was presented 09/09/2009 by Metasploit with MetaSploit (Website). The advisory is shared at symantec.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-3028. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
