A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component about:certerror. The certificate-warning functionality in browser/components/certerror/content/aboutCertError.xhtml in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 12.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.6, Thunderbird 5.0 through 12.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.6, and SeaMonkey before 2.10 does not properly handle attempted clickjacking of the about:certerror page, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to trick users into adding an unintended exception via an IFRAME element.
The weakness was shared 07/17/2012 by Matt McCutchen as MFSA 2012-54 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1964 since 03/30/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 522 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802893 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120366 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1088)).
Upgrading to version 14 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
