Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 13.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.6, Thunderbird 5.0 through 13.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.6, and SeaMonkey before 2.11 do not properly implement the JavaScript sandbox utility, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code with improper privileges via a javascript: URL.

The weakness was released 07/17/2012 by Karthikeyan Bhargavan (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla Corporation as MFSA 2012-56 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1967 since 03/30/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59998 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:1088)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120366 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1088)).
