Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in PHP (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the file exif.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
exif.c in the Exif extension in PHP before 5.3.6 on 64-bit platforms performs an incorrect cast, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via an image with a crafted Image File Directory (IFD) that triggers a buffer over-read.
The weakness was presented 03/19/2011 as Bug 680972 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-0708 since 01/31/2011. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68432 (Oracle Linux 5 : php (ELSA-2012-0033)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120017 (CentOS Security Update for PHP (CESA-2012:0033)).
Upgrading to version 5.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (16261), Tenable (68432), SecurityFocus (BID 46365†), OSVDB (0†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57273†).
