A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Symantec LiveUpdate Administrator up to 2.2.2.8. This affects the function Admin. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the management login GUI page in Symantec LiveUpdate Administrator (LUA) before 2.3 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the username field, as demonstrated by injecting an IFRAME element into the event log, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-0545.
The bug was discovered 07/14/2010. The weakness was published 03/21/2011 by Nikolas Sotiriu (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-1524. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. A public exploit has been developed by Nikolas Sotiriu in Perl and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 251 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53209 (Symantec LiveUpdate Administrator < 2.3 CSRF (SYM11-005)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 2.2.2.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
