Details
A vulnerability was found in ISC DHCP up to 4.2.1 (Network Management Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
dhclient in ISC DHCP 3.0.x through 4.2.x before 4.2.1-P1, 3.1-ESV before 3.1-ESV-R1, and 4.1-ESV before 4.1-ESV-R2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in a hostname obtained from a DHCP message, as demonstrated by a hostname that is provided to dhclient-script.
The weakness was presented 04/05/2011 by Sebastian Krahmer with SuSE Security Team as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-0997. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Pierre Kim and been published 5 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68251 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 / 6 : dhcp (ELSA-2011-0428)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119468 (VMware ESX Console OS Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2011-0010)).
A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11457.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66580), Exploit-DB (37623), Tenable (68251), SecurityFocus (BID 47176†) and OSVDB (71493†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
