Summary
A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9. This impacts the function osf_partition. Performing a manipulation results in input validation.
This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1163. There is no available exploit.
It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This affects the function osf_partition. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The osf_partition function in fs/partitions/osf.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.38 does not properly handle an invalid number of partitions, which might allow local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel heap memory via vectors related to partition-table parsing.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 04/09/2011 by Timo Warns as Bug 688021 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-1163 since 03/03/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1846 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67081 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2011:0833)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165558 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:019)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67081), SecurityFocus (BID 46878†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1025225†).
