A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel 2002/2003 (Spreadsheet Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. Microsoft Excel 2002 SP3 and 2003 SP3, Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac, and Open XML File Format Converter for Mac allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted HLink record in an Excel file, aka "Excel Buffer Overwrite Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 04/12/2011 by Rodrigo Rubira Branco with Check Point (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-0104. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/03/2025).
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4504.
