The RuntimeHelpers.InitializeArray method in metadata/icall.c in Mono, when Moonlight 2.x before 2.4.1 or 3.x before 3.99.3 is used, does not properly restrict data types, which allows remote attackers to modify internal read-only data structures, and cause a denial of service (plugin crash) or corrupt the internal state of the security manager, via a crafted media file, as demonstrated by modifying a C# struct.
The weakness was presented 04/13/2011 by Basti (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-0989. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75588 (openSUSE Security Update : libmoon-devel (openSUSE-SU-2011:0313-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165189 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:007)).
Upgrading to version 2.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
