The OpenURLInDefaultBrowser method in RealNetworks RealPlayer 11.0 through 11.1 and 14.0.0 through 14.0.2, and RealPlayer SP 1.0 through 1.1.5, launches a default handler for the filename specified in the first argument, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a .rnx filename corresponding to a crafted RNX file.

The weakness was disclosed 04/18/2011 by Peter Vreugdenhil (Website). The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1426. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/28/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53409 (RealPlayer for Windows < Build 12.0.1.647 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
