Summary
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in KDE SC. Impacted is the function KGetMetalink::File::isValidNameAttr. Such manipulation leads to path traversal.
This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2011-1586. No exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in KDE SC. Affected by this issue is the function KGetMetalink::File::isValidNameAttr. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the KGetMetalink::File::isValidNameAttr function in ui/metalinkcreator/metalinker.cpp in KGet in KDE SC 4.6.2 and earlier allows remote attackers to create arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the name attribute of a file element in a metalink file. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2010-1000.
The weakness was published 04/26/2011 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at websvn.kde.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1586. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55072 (Ubuntu 9.10 / 10.04 LTS / 10.10 : kdenetwork vulnerability (USN-1114-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119182 (Red Hat Update for kdenetwork (RHSA-2011:0465)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66826), Tenable (55072) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-31309†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
